About the Weston, Florida Area

It would be very difficult to find a more perfect place to reside than the city of Weston. With glorious surroundings, friendly neighbors and superb community services, Weston is one of the most sought after and enjoyable places to hang one’s hat. Most communities are gated and residents feel secure knowing Weston boasts the lowest crime rate in Broward County. The parks and green spaces, which city planners have provided for, give residents year round places to enjoy the lovely Florida climate. This welcoming and diverse community is a dynamic place to live, work and raise a family.

Location
Weston is located in southeastern Florida close to the larger metropolises of Miami and Fort Lauderdale, as well as their famous beaches.

Geography/Terrain
With the palm tree-lined streets and the beautiful landscaping throughout the city, Weston is a charming area to visit or reside. Citizens of Weston take pride in their community where the many parks give residents a place to enjoy the ideal semi-tropical climate.

Distance to 3 closest major cities
The town of Weston is roughly 18 miles from Fort Lauderdale, 30 miles from Miami and 200 miles from Orlando.

Jobs
The business community in Weston has shown dramatic growth. This is thanks to the significant efforts of the Chamber of Commerce. This organization, which boasts more than 600 members, holds fast to its purpose to help build and solidify the economic fabric of the community. It has helped businesses such as Hershey’s make the decision to relocate to the up and coming community. Other businesses anchoring the Weston Parks of Commerce are Levi Strauss, Nabisco, and the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, which has a satellite office and distribution center here.

Housing
A full range of housing options is available in Weston. Timeshares, apartments, town homes, and multi-million-dollar mansions are all part of the expanding community. Ranked as one of the best places to retire by CNN and Money Magazine, Weston offers affordable housing options for people of all ages. The array of homes in the area makes it easy to find a larger home when you find you need more space, or downsize a bit when your home has outgrown you. Many Weston neighborhoods provide scenic walkways along streets, with tree-lined sidewalks. Whatever type of housing you are looking for, you’ll be able to find it here in one of the nation’s best places to live.

Parks/Sports/Recreation/Golf
Several parks are provided for various types of rest and relaxation, from passive Peace Mound Park at Weston and Indian Trace roads – with a path-lined lake, gentle breezes and towering trees, to Tequesta Trace Park, dedicated to sports with baseball, soccer softball, and football fields, plus a roller rink. Markham Park is a full-scale county park with wilderness camping area, pools, and playgrounds. Favorite activities here include shooting at the Target Range and star gazing at Fox Observatory. There is even a special area dedicated to model plane enthusiasts. Many residents enjoy the two boat ramps popular with Everglade’s fisher folk and jet skiers alike.

The Bonaventure Town center boasts many different sporting activities to keep oneself fit. Adults and children here make good use of the pools, indoor skating rink, fitness center, and racquetball and tennis courts. The Weston Regional Park was recently the proud host of the 2004 Florida State AYSO games. This world-class park has eight lighted fields and spectators enjoy family entertainment while watching first-rate soccer competition.

Within minutes of Weston, you will find near endless opportunities for recreation. The Office Depot Center located in nearby Sunrise is the home to the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League. Many musical tours also perform here to sold-out crowds. Miami’s beautiful beaches offer a perfect place to relax and Fort Lauderdale’s renowned Las Olas Boulevard can be a fascinating place to take a stroll.

At Bonaventure Country Club, the atmosphere is both friendly and inviting. This beautiful club includes two PGA-managed courses, which have hosted golf’s elites, including Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia, and Jesper Pamevik. Practice on the driving range or putting green or go visit the pro shop. After a great game, feast at their fabulous banquet facilities.

Special Attractions/Events
The heart and soul of Weston can be found at Weston Town center located between Arvida Parkway and Indian Trace Road. Here you will find one-of-a-kind boutiques, upscale salons, and fine dining, where visitors park at the outskirts of the center and walk to their destination amid esplanades, fauna, and fountains, which create an ambiance to match the shops and restaurants. This is where visitors and locals will meet to chat and just enjoy the company, shopping and views.

The Arts Council, along with the Weston Philharmonic Society, enlightens and enriches the town during the Weston Art Festival. They provide outdoor concerts the likes of the Philharmonic Orchestra and the Florida International University Jazz Band. The diversity of the residents also leads to a cultural experience seldom found in a city as new as this one. The residents who reside here come from many different countries and backgrounds and bring a desire to share experiences and culture.

Nearby Fort Lauderdale rivals Venice with its 300 miles of waterways just waiting to be explored. A-Admiral Cruise Line takes you on a two and one half hour narrated tour in an amazing glass bottom boat. See schools of colorful fish and appreciate nature’s wonders in the coral reefs. With so many beaches close by, there are endless choices to indulge the sun-lover in you.

Interesting Facts/Historic Buildings and Places
The original City of Weston was once a multi-use real estate development of the Arvida Corporation. The word Arvida is an acronym of sorts, which comes from the name of its founder, Arthur Veining Davis, who’s Aluminum Corporation of America, was known as Alcoa. In the late 1970’s the company was a subsidiary of the Disney Corporation. Residents attending a grand opening gala event even got to meet Mickey Mouse and his buddy Goofy. After a short period, residents voted to incorporate the City of Weston and neighboring communities, both north and south, were asked to join in the city.

Built as a trading post for settlers and the Seminole Indians in 1901, Stranahan House in Fort Lauderdale has been the site most closely associated with the founding of the city and its economic and social development. Frank Stranahan chose the site because this was where he operated his ferry across the New River to what is now North Miami. It quickly evolved into the post office, community center, and town hall. The structure, built of Dade County pine, is an excellent example of Florida vernacular architecture in a tropical wilderness setting. In 1973, the house was named to the National Register of Historic Places. Restored to its 1923 configuration Stranahan House is a must see in South Florida.

Weston is home to a new and unique university, which was founded in Europe based on a premise that a university should move passed the traditional approach. American InterContinental University’s professors have real world experiences that allow students to follow a path, which prepares them for successful experiences in fields of their choice. You will find many AIU graduates in the intercontinental business communities. It is conveniently located between Fort Lauderdale and Miami and provides all the amenities these exciting cities have to offer.

Real Estate Tips
Bargain Properties >Such A Deal

Most sellers know that buyers are attracted to homes that are spotlessly clean, well-maintained and tastefully decorated. Sometimes the seller can't make the extra effort to prepare the home for showing. Some real estate listings are being sold to settle estates or by someone who has been transferred unexpectedly and didn't have time to complete the necessary cosmetic repairs. Homes that need work are often exceptional values.

When a real estate agent shows you a house that needs help, try to imagine how it would look with new carpet, a fresh coat of paint and your furniture settled inside. Because the condition and overall appeal of a house have such an impact on the selling price, "fixer-uppers" are often priced lower than comparable homes. If the home is structurally sound and has updated systems, a small investment of "elbow grease" and paint could make it look fabulous.
